Art Intro News Letter
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to middle school art! My name is Mrs. Hawkins and I will be your art teacher this year. This is my 21st year teaching at Park View Middle School and I look forward to working with all of you. You will find
that middle school art is much different from the art in elementary school. 6th and 7th graders will meet twice a week for the whole year. 8th grader will will meet twice a week, for two quarters (one semester). We will be formulating ideas, solving design problems, applying new art concepts, and using new media & techniques to express meaning within our art.
Your success in art here at PVMS will depend on the following:
•Demonstration of attention and willingness to learn
•Regular class attendance (per school policy)
•Taking responsibility for lessons missed due to absence
•Successful completion of one Common Task per grade
•Participation in all aspects of the lesson taught (introduction, demonstration, studio project, homework, and critique)
•Acting age-appropriate while following classroom and school rules
•Being prepared for class, including but not limited to, having the correct materials
•Classroom Responsibilities: respect, positive attitudes, responsibility for clean up and safety procedures
•Trying your best
The students will have exposure to:
•The Elements & Principles of Design
•Technical Properties: related to drawing, design, painting, printmaking, graphics, sculpture, ceramics, and environmental design
•Expressive Properties: how visual artwork successfully convey thoughts based on ideas, feelings, memories, attitudes, themes, and or human experience
•Integration of other disciplines of the visual arts
•Introduction of styles, artists, art history and major works of art
•How to describe and respond to a work of art
•Be familiar with the VAD's
•Careers in the visual arts
•How to use art materials, tools and equipment safely
In addition, Park View Middle School students will strive to:
•Comprehend the content of visual arts and how it related within and across the disciplines
•Communicate, problem solve, analyze, take risks, apply technology, be resourceful, work together, and become responsible citizens
•Artistically recognize and appreciate the visual arts
My job as your middle school art teacher is to expose you to different types of art. In every lesson you will be introduced to new artists, techniques, media, application and history. Within these lessons, there will be mini-lessons you will be graded on. It is important that you understand that I grade everyone fairly. You will be graded on your own scale. Grades reflect how well you, as an individual, have learned and used the concepts presented to you. Not everyone is an artist, or even likes art. Everyone needs to try and learn something in my class regardless of your artistic ability. You should leave this class knowing more about art history, new artists, new ways to create and think about art, the ability to talk about & reflect on art, and have a deeper respect for your art and the art of others.
I do not expect anyone to break the rules, but if something does happen, I will take the appropriate action. I will way each situation and determine the appropriate consequences. You will not argue with me; any occurrences will result in a referral to the school administration.
I am looking forward to this year, and am interested in your ideas and way of thinking. If I can help you in any way, my door is always open. Please feel free to stay after school. As long as you are being respectful to me, your peers, yourself, the art room, and supplies, you are welcome any time I am available.
Respectfully,
Mrs. A. Hawkins
